Since the summer of 2023, Mark J. Berkowitz has brought his extensive experience in labor and employment law to the classroom as an Adjunct Professor of Law at St. Thomas University School of Law in North Miami. His elective course in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) provides students with a comprehensive understanding of resolving legal disputes outside traditional courtrooms.

The course covers key aspects of mediation, focusing on voluntary settlement strategies to resolve litigation cases efficiently. Students also explore arbitration, examining both commercial and labor arbitration cases governed by collective bargaining agreements. Berkowitz’s curriculum highlights the distinctions between these forms of arbitration, offering insights into policy goals and best practices for advocates.

With nearly three decades of experience as a labor and employment attorney, Berkowitz integrates practical examples and case studies into the course. Students gain valuable skills in negotiation, conflict resolution, and strategic planning—essential tools for navigating today’s legal landscape.

By delving into the intricacies of ADR, this course encourages students to view dispute resolution through a collaborative lens, preparing them for roles as mediators, arbitrators, and advocates. Berkowitz’s expertise makes this class a dynamic opportunity for law students to explore innovative approaches to legal problem-solving.
